Pneumatic Conveying System

The pneumatic conveying system is a method of conveying dry powdered material in a pipeline through air without any moving parts. The pneumatic conveying system can be routed conveniently above the working area and can have bends and turns to reach the destination point which gives pneumatic conveying mode lot of flexibility. For conveying materials such as powders, pellets and granules of sizes from a few microns to about 25 mm, pneumatic conveying is advantageous over any other conventional conveying systems. Any pneumatic conveying system shall have four basic components namely prime mover which develops motive force (roots blower, compressor or centrifugal fan), feeding device which introduces product into conveying line (rotary valve, ventury, pressure vessel),piping, bends diverters and product to air separator (cyclone, bag filter) Typically the systems are bifurcated in two main categories - Pressure type & Vacuum type, each is sub categorized in dense phase and dilute phase conveying system.

Any bulk solid that is subjected to physical movement, crushing, cleaning etc. displaces the air in the surrounding this displaced air carries fines of that product along with it. These fines at higher concentration are commonly known as Dust. This airborne dust then spread in the surrounding atmosphere, if allowed, polluting the ambient conditions.

According to WHO air pollution is defined as limited to situation in which the, out-door ambient atmosphere contains materials in concentration which are harmful to man and his surrounding environment. The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act in general defines air pollutant as any solid, liquid or gaseous substance present in the atmosphere in such concentration as may be or, tend to be injurious to human beings or, other living creatures or, plants or, building structures or environment.

Baghouse dust collectors have been used for industrial dust collection for over 50 years, providing a full range of solutions from nuisance dust to extremely heavy dust loads along with bin venting and product reclaim, for this application dust collector are used.

Fume extraction system is extremely important for welding operations, workers are in a daily contact with harmful weld fume particulate because weld fume is made up of 30 to 80 percent submicron-sized particles. That means that most of these particles are respirable (enter the lungs), which makes it critical to have reliable, high performance fume collectors, weld fume extraction and weld smoke filters that collect the fume before it reaches your welder’s breathing zone.

Bulk solids handling & processing system simplified means Inplant handling of  Bulk solids in powder or granular form which includes transportation, Flow control, flow diversion, cleaning, size reduction, storage, mixing, weighing & batching, nuisance venting and dust collection.

 

The two main modes of transportation are Pneumatic handling system and Mechanical handling system. Flow control and diversion can be assisted by components such as Rotary valves; Knife gate valves, Butterfly valves, for diversion dual tunnel diverter valves and flap type diverter valves can be used. For removing impurities like oversize and undersize particles and heavy particles like stones present in the solids, cleaning equipments such as precleaner, classifier and destoner are installed. Magnetic separator & all metal detectors are used for removing ferrous as well as non ferrous metals. Roller mills and hammer mills are used for size reduction. Galvanized hopper bottom and flat bottom silos serve for storage of grains and Mild Steel/Stainless still silos are used for storage of powders or other solids . Mixing includes components such as static blenders, ribbon blenders and screw type blenders. Finally, while transporting bulk solids at each transfer point or at the discharge while dropping solids create some displacement in the surrounding air, this displacement tends to carry fines along, this creates nuisance & at higher concentration of fines is commonly known as dust; for these cases dust collection or extraction system plays its part. 1] Grain Silo Loading Section: Grains will be unloaded in the feed hopper manually. Grating is provided in the feed hopper to avoid large size impurities. Suction hood is provided on the feed hopper to extract dust generated during grain unloading. The material will be conveyed by screw conveyor to bucket elevator, which discharges the grain into precleaner. The precleaner is for size separation and cleaning of grain. Cleaned grains are conveyed to storage silo through bucket elevator and chain conveyor. A dust extraction system comprising of bag filter, centrifugal fan, rotary valve is provided this section. Bag filter separates dust, and clean air is discharged in the atmosphere. Pulse jet type cleaning mechanism is incorporated in the bag filter, which ensures the bags are cleaned at specified time interval.Grain silo capacity is arrived at based on no. of days storage.

2] Grain Cleaning & Milling section: The chain conveyor (at discharge of grain silos) feeds the material to bucket elevator which in turn feeds the material to the flow balancer. The flow balancer feeds classifiers. The classifiers are provided for size separation and cleaning of grain with the help of vibrations produced by 2 nos. of vibromotors. Classifiers are provided with 2-deck system and coarse discharge for oversize material, fines discharge for undersize material and product discharge for good product.Aspiration system is provided for all the classifiers. The product is passed on to Destoner, it separates stones present in the grain this results in safeguarding the process / upstream equipments. The vibrations produced by two numbers of vibromotors effect stone separation. Each destoner is provided with separate aspiration system.A magnet is provided after destoners to entrap ferrous particles. Material is then fed to bucket elevator. Bucket elevator feeds grain to the hammer mills. Dedusting points are provided at bucket elevator, flow balancer and hopper above mill. A dust extraction system is provided for this section. Screw conveyor provided at discharge of mills feed flour to turbo sifter, it is provided for size separation of flour. The oversize particles are recycled & the good product is conveyed to bucket elevator. Bucket elevator feeds flour to flour silos.

3] Flour Handling Section:Silo discharge aid provided fluidizes material by vibration. Here on product is transported to weigh scale which controls & totalises.

We do know that building, operating, and maintaining an industrial plant site is difficult and challenging at best. Many times events present difficult challenges because experienced personnel may be limited. Observations are the human intervention in the plant or process has limitation on various fronts with the main concern being; reliability and human error. Teaming with semi/full automation can help overcome these challenges in a cost effective and timely manner.

A control system is required to monitor product passing through various stages of manufacturing processes, during those stages it requires a kind of control in order to adjust the quality & quantity of it. However, to adjust this, it is required to control many physical quantities such as pressure, Temperature etc.

Further more, in some dangerous applications such as petrochemical factories and nuclear reactors the control becomes much critical, however, losing control here will be disastrous. Here control systems and automation have proven their worth.

Basically, control system receives input signals from other devices, these signals will be here are many sensors and transducers inside the plant converts electrical, physical quantities into signals, there could be thousand of transmitters in a factory sending signals to the control system. These signals are locally processed and converted into a language that is conversant with the control systems. Each signal is coded, and a unique tag is generated for each signal, this completes the signal generation and transfer up to the control system process. As the control systems are programmable and programmed as per the individual process requirement considering all safe operations and stage interlocks. Each program is written on the processing and control unit of PLC, once this activity is completed, the control system is ready to take charge of the operations. It now knows what each and every individual tag means and what shall be the further process.  Also if there is any safety failure or hazardous activity has taken place it also knows the corrective action on the same.
